The diesel is required, in this case, for additional horsepower to haul such a heavy train over that terrain, and maintain the tight schedule. Also, the dynamic brake is VERY useful. Other steam operations, previously under Amtrak required the Amtrak diesel for Head End Power for the passenger cars. |
