Georges Creek 1st. Revenue Cars over the Shortline - 08/13/2018
Author: DTWilson

Georges Creek Railway received 12 loaded cars of pulpwood this afternoon from CSX at Westernport, MD. The 12 cars were handled by GCK #7471 leading with #25 on the rear of the train. The loads were taken to Franklin, MD along GCK tracks to be unloaded for the Verso Paper mill in nearby Luke, MD.

1) SD40 #7471 moves 12 loads of pulpwood west near Creekside Park in Westernport, MD.

2) Passing the American Legion Post in Westernport. In the Back Ground, the stack marks the location of the Verso Papermill in Luke, MD

3) #7471 starts to pull the cars thru the crossovers onto GCK trackage under the watchfull eye of CSX and Verso employees.

I agree, great to see traffic on this line and with genuine Western Maryland Railway Power as well.

1) and 2) GP9 #25 on the rear tied on to help as needed... westbound at Creekside Park in Westernport, MD.

3) With the cars tied down and crews starting to unload, the #25 cuts away and returns to Westernport.

Great stuff Tim! Knew this was going down but there was no way I was going to be able to get off to swing down there for it. Nice to see that you got some sun for the occasion as well. Hopefully this isn't the last of the revenue moves either.

Nice to finally see those units put to good use.

I have to wonder, however, why the logs were unloaded and delivered by truck rather than just delivering the loaded cars directly to the mill?

The track that was once used to unload railcars of pulpwood onto the conveyor to the chipper house at the woodyard was removed several years ago by CSX. There is no space at Beryl that they could set the trucks up and unload the wood without blocking either the main or other yard tracks.

The guy operating the kuckleboom loader is going to have a full days work! If they (Verso) have to do this for long, I'll bet they wish they still had the tracks and cranes that were removed! The wood on those cars will not last long at that mill if they are producing 1250 Tons of paper per day! There is something to be said for redundancy!

One of the Verso Employees said that train represented about 6 hrs. of paper production...

Classic big RR move:  remove the spur--"there's no business here."

Along comes a shortline and suddenly business happens again.

You gotta wonder if the tracks will go back in...?

And where did 2 beautiful WM units suddenly come from??   Love the paint scheme of that old line--had no idea these units even existed!
