A few CN shots west of Halifax this week
Author: andrewcastle

Hey folks.

Here are three shots I took this week.

First two shots are from Monday November 12, 2018. A friend was visiting, we hit the road around 0900 with the scanner on hoping to find something. Train 511 (daytime gypsum) wasn't hauling rock that day so we were hoping to catch 120 and 407, things worked out for us.

First is CN train 120 just east of Windsor Junction NS about to cross the Cobequid Road. Second shot was taken about 20 minutes later just down the road, here a single car 407 is approaching Windsor Junction. The whole train easily fit in the frame, as my friend said "It's a unit boxcar train". 407 normally has a long string of autoracks but the Autoport in Dartmouth did not load cars the previous day due to the Remembrance Day holiday.

Third shot was taken on November 13. It was a dark gloomy day, I received a heads up that 120 was on its way and first wasn't going to bother going out but after a couple minutes I decided why not? I decided to stay close to home, grab a shot at the west end of the Sandy Cove siding, and then grab a Timmies coffee on the way back home. The plan worked out, the shot was okay but not great, and the coffee satisfied my caffeine addiction.

Thanks for looking.

Here's the same 120 on the previous day in Montreal, running somewhat later than usual. The sunny patch was a little too slow advancing.

Your second shot is a really well-executed use of what might otherwise be an anticlimactic train; love the deep, deep blue.

Once again, Andrew and I were both out chasing the same train, but didn't run into each other.  This time I poached his view at Brentwood (approach to Alton), but without the bovine in the foreground.

I considered going after 407, but when they called the RTC to say they only had one car, I decided to skip that and go for the low hanging fruit at Birch Cove instead.  This shot is much more doable now that we're on standard time, although that pole shadow will start extending over the north track in another week or two.

Thanks guys.

Geoff, I am happy Brentwood worked out for you. I am looking forward to trying it again in the summer to see how it looks with leaves on the trees.
