Vistas at Hivolt
Author: z-trains

I first became aware of the overlook at Hivolt when I was 5 and watching a VHS of an old Videorails film about Cajon Pass. At the time and until a few years ago I just kinda assumed that they had hiked to that overlook and didn't really realize how accessible it was but, since first coming out to the overlook 3 years ago I've become a bit hooked on it. The sweeping vistas offered here are easily some of the most scenic on the entire pass and, yesterday, I managed to get a couple of UP trains on both the Cajon Sub and Palmdale Cutoff passing by the scenic location, complete with snow on the mountains!

1 & 2: A northbound WCRV creeps up past Hivolt as its southbound counterpart waits for a new crew at Hiland, in the distance. This train kept a solid speed of about 3mph between here and Phelan and tied up the line for a significant period of time.
3: While the manifest was creeping upgrade, a pair of UP trains passed by on the Cajon subdivision below. The daily Z-LADV is passing a former SP AC4400CW as the DPU of a westbound intermodal, with the martinez spur visible in the background.

That is a cool place, so how do you get there and do you need a 4 wheel drive or a least an SUV with some ground clearance?  Is there any shade there for summer time railfanning?

Thanks,

Dave
