Train #5 detour on UP

Todays Amtrak train #5  detouring  near Union Grove Illinois at MP14. Since they started running them on the UP its been a major diaster. They need to just park it till the line gets fully opened and the freight congestion get cleared up

Nice pic, but you might want to expand on your "major diaster" comment...

Major disaster is leaving Chicago on time, 10 hours late into Omaha (UP)
Now expected 13 hours late into Denver (that 3 hours is on BSNF)

Met some of the people who rode Trainjam today at the final day of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.  They said they arrived EMY 20 hours late, and one of the coaches lost all power during the trip, and the last group received only chili and potatoes for their fourth day meal on the train.  Still, I didn't hear any of them reciting the "Never Again" mantra, so I suspect next year's Trainjam (if Amtrak permits there to be one) will once again sell out within 24 hours of ticketing opening.

To be real, all but 2 hours of that delay was due to congestion into Omaha in the last 20 miles...  it's a single track railroad from Missouri Valley, IA to Council Bluffs on the UP Omaha Sub (~15 miles) and it's essentially a single track railroad from Omaha to Ashland, NE due to short siding lengths on the BNSF Omaha Sub (~30 miles); with both railroads trying to run a maximum complement of trains over this single open route to maintain some service.   There is only 7 miles of 2MT on the UP Omaha Sub through Council Bluffs into Omaha to make meets.  All trains are going to take heavy delays, trying to prioritize 2 Amtraks through that is only going to make it worse.

Thanks for that explanation. That said... that much delay over that short a portion of the route approaches CN-levels of delay to the Canadian in Manitoba or SK, where sometimes it seems like it loses 10 hours trying to 100 miles.

To add to that, chill out is the best thing, can't fool with mother nature.
Just talked to my brother in Columbus, Nebraska (right on the UP main line, next to the loup and platte rivers), and he said he hasn't heard a train whistle in days.
Don't know where they are re-routing the trains, since there is still major flooding along that route, especially around Fremont, Nebraska

Here in Colorado Springs, we are seeing more freight traffic (both UP and BSNF)  going south to Pueblo, and then east thru Kansas

I'm surprised Amtrak is even running 5 and 6 right now.  Kudos to UP for accommodating them over their congested freight line.

I wonder how UP's hot trains are doing ?   Why not just stick Amtrak ahead of or behind a bird ?

Any ideas yet on the reopening of the line? I’m booked out of GBB-SAC 4/9, still two plus weeks away. Should be close either way.
