More please!! Axy Date: 03/23/08 15:49 Re: Santa Fe Zebras Part Four Author: zephyrus Excellent! I never really cared much for the blue with yellow stripes (vastly preferred the Yellowbonnet with blue), but every other Santa Fe paint scheme is great in my book. Love the zebra stripes.
Z Date: 03/23/08 16:58 Re: Santa Fe Zebras Part Four Author: PERichardson Thanks to Mr. Fox, we can now enjoy this paint scheme on the PHL
Date: 03/23/08 18:10 Re: Santa Fe Zebras Part Four Author: BCHellman Some of the strips look aluminum; while others look white. Did they use two colors, or is it the film, or is it aluminum faded to white?
Date: 03/23/08 18:42 Re: Santa Fe Zebras Part Four Author: kcjonz Yes. Some units wore white diagonal stripes with horizontal silver stripes, lettering, and numbers.
Date: 03/24/08 00:15 Re: Santa Fe Zebras Part Two Author: 90mac You've got my attention!!!
OUTSTANDING!!! THANK YOU!!! TAH Date: 03/24/08 01:11 Re: Santa Fe Zebras Part Two Author: JohnSweetser The second photo (of #2304) can also be seen on pg. 118 of Stagner's "Santa Fe 1940-1971 In Color, Volume 3: Albuquerque-Los Angeles."
The eighth photo (of #810) can be seen on pg. 31 of the book. The eleventh photo (of #927) can be found on pg. 30 of the book, erroneously placed in the Barstow section (the book's author may also have incorrectly identified the photographer). Date: 03/24/08 22:11 Re: Santa Fe Zebras Part Two Author: UPJeff The 515 is white stripes with silver lettering, you can see that the cab number is different in color to the stripes.

I will be painting ALCo S-2 No.2381 at PSRM, Campo, CA, soon and we are taking it back to Zebra. Does anyone have a picture of it in service during it's zebra days? http://www.sdrm.org/roster/diesel/d-2381/index.html

The silver ("aluminum") parts of the scheme are the same as the very simple black with a silver stripe and emblem "wartime" paint scheme Santa Fe used before switching to zebra stripes around 1949. I've often wondered if these units were delivered in the simpler scheme, and a Santa Fe paint shop that had only white paint on hand added the stripes. |
