Oddly enough, the early October snows didn't translate into a snowy winter last year, and there was actually more snow on the ground in October than December.

Again taking advantage of cheap post-9/11 airfares, my wife and I flew to Japan to visit friends and take a trip to the natural mineral water onsens on Kyushu. And of course, to visit "Aso Boy", JR's narrow gauge steam operation to Mt. Aso's somewhat active caldera. Sadly, "Aso Boy" made his last run in August 2005, as JR was having difficulty obtaining spare parts.
