Joint Line the day after . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

. . always look forward to the day after a snowstorm up here in the neighborhood at Palmer Lake, CO, located along the joint UP-BNSF Denver Pueblo Joint Line main. When I awoke this morning however it didn't look good as it was still snowing at 0700 hrs. As I watched the first southbound of the morning slowly crawl up grade toward the crossing here in Palmer Lake it finally stalled out just fifty feet short of the crossing and the end of the long climb from Denver to the top of the grade here. With the sun trying to break through I suited up and headed down to shoot him just short of the crossing (top) waiting for a train behind to pull up, cut off and tie down his train before assisting him over the top. Not wanting to waste the good morning sun I headed down and gave the conductor a ride back to the engine but now days with so many rules and regulations it still took almost another hour before the original train finally topped over the grade and stopped on the down grade to cut off his pushers adjacent the Inn at Palmer Divide (middle) a spot I have shot before many times but don't recall any winter shots here? After another half hour and loss of the great morning light at this location the train finally started down the grade toward Pueblo and La Junta (bottom) . . . three more to come . . . .

. . hearing the DS mention four more behind I had to go see what they were. Of course all were typical run of the mill BNSF coal trains waiting at the north end of Larkspur (top) at Greenland (middle) and after another forty five minutes the hero train that shoved the first train over the top finally came around the big curve at Palmer Lake (bottom) after which I headed home to finish clearing the driveway and deck, dry out, warm up and have some lunch bringing an end to a nice day after in the neighborhood.

Great shots. There was another train behind the BNSF 5819, an oil train with a fairly new leader, the BNSF 8080.

Joe,

There is something about #1 that I really like. It is like the new and the old!!!! #2 is a close second. Okay, I will admit it, the whole batch are good shots, no make it Great Shots. Glad that you got outside to check out the neighborhood.

Yep - #2 is my choice. Nothing like wet sticky snow to coat the trees. #1 is good as well but i hate the conductor side of those EMD SD70ACE's.
