Akron Area Acronyms
Author: Poker2662

Today I photographed... NKP on CVSR, AC&Y and DRGW on W&LE, BNSF-ATSF-CP on CSX, and EMDX and BN on W&LE.

To further elaborate...

Today my dad and I made our way up to Peninsula, Ohio, to get a few pictures of the NKP 765 on its final day on the Cuyahoga Valley for this year. I wasn't able to get any pictures of the 765 pulling the train, but I got a few pictures of it as it was being towed north from Botzum to Fitzwater this morning. I got pictures of it at Peninsula, Jaite, and Brecksville.

Satisfied with the pictures we got of the 765, we headed back south toward Akron. Passing through Akron, we heard W&LE train 663 get permission to go east out of the W&LE Brittain yard. We made it to the Gilchrest Road crossing outside of Mogadore for pictures of it. It had W&LE GP35-3 107 leading, which has commemorative Akron Canton & Youngstown logos on the sides. It was pulling W&LE GP40-3 302, which is in Rio Grande paint. This crossing is at the very east end of the former AC&Y trackage, so it was nice to see the 107 here.

While waiting for 663 to clear Gilchrest Road, we heard the CSX dispatcher talking to ABC Z64114. The ABC was heading back toward the W&LE connection at Summit Street so they could go to the W&LE Brittain yard. They had W&LE engines 6312, 6348, and 6387 for power. 6312 and 6348 are still in EMD leasing paint schemes, while 6387 is in BN green paint.

But, just before we found the ABC train, we caught CSX train Q155 westbound approaching the AY signals at Arlington Street in Akron with BNSF, Santa Fe, and Canadian Pacific power.

Thanks for looking.

This is one of the most interesting days of "Akron area" images on Trainorders. It isn't only steam but colorful unusual lashups as well. Keep this day in mind because there aren't many better than this.

Not to upstage or hijack the good work of Poker2662, but when I logged onto TO this morning and saw the IOTD on the home page it looked rather familiar. I checked my own images taken at Brecksville and sure enough I photographed the same train at the same spot at the same time. I have never met Poker2662, but I believe he is the photographer just beyond that road in dark clothing to the right of the cross buck. Note that the same people are sitting, standing around the picnic table in the background. The train was running empty to Fitzwater shops to get out of the way of the northbound CVSR Scenic train so that it could complete its trip to Rockside Road station.

So I have an image of the photographer getting his award-winning photo. Congratulates to Poker2662 for winning IOTD and for posting a nice diverse photo selection of a day in the Akron area. Nice images.

Thanks guys for the compliments, I appreciate it.

Yes, that is me in your photo! Very nice picture, but I hope you were able to get pictures of the 765 without me in the way!

We had seen the train with 6771/765 go north out of Boston Mills and nobody seemed to be following it. We got to Brecksville and there didn't appear to be any railfans there! But of course as soon as the train rounded the corner, it seemed like all the railfans popped out of the weeds...haha.

Yes, that is me taking a picture of Poker2662 taking a picture. I am the guy in the red jacket. How about that! A triple play. No, no one got in my way. I had barely beat the train to Brecksville and had to jump out and start shooting right away.
