Western Railroad Discussion > Pre-fire photos of the Weed MillDate: 09/16/14 08:25 Pre-fire photos of the Weed Mill Author: photobob Here's some shots I took back in April 30, 2010 of a CORP test train at the mill at Weed. I know that an area of homes to the north of Weed were pretty much destroyed as for the mill I haven't heard anything conclusive. John Signor is on his way up there right now as he had to go up there yesterday to help evacuate his son and wife who live at Lake Shastina which is just north of Weed. I'll try and get a report from him later today on the exact damage to the mill. A sad day for the community of Weed.

I was up there about 15 years ago but I never went around the mill to take pictures, one of those regrets that will always be in the back of my mind.

It sounds like a good chunk of the whole town is gone or severely damaged.
Andre Date: 09/16/14 10:39 Re: Pre-fire photos of the Weed Mill Author: TCnR A number of photos in the media were taken along the road where the truck with the blue cab is in the last photo. On of the photos showed that wood chip pile with fire on the edges.
Listening to the FD radio on the net last night the mill bldg had fires and were being worked. The City water pressure was failing so water trucks were being brought in to pull water from the Mill Pond, closer to town. Losing the Mill would be a very bad thing for the Community. Some good news, the Mill is still in business: http://www.mtshastanews.com/article/20140916/NEWS/140919770 According to a Roseburg press release, the main processing area and facility were not destroyed, but other buildings on the complex were damaged. Date: 09/17/14 09:50 Re: Pre-fire photos of the Weed Mill Author: TCnR My understanding is that all the structures in the photos are still existing, the wood chip pile was on fire and the log deck may be damaged but mostly in place. The older mill structures off to the right of the photos were hit, older wooden structures with the power plant and some older offices. For those who know the area or are following in Signor's book, that's where the tail track reversing back into the mill loading area is.
From the photo perspectives, the lost homes were to the far right and far left of the mill. The part of town behind the photographers was not damaged. I don't know about the General Store (just found another post that says the old Store is ok). The large green mill building appears in the CalTrans Roadcam photos from Monday and Tuesday. Which is consistent with the way the wind was blowing on Monday afternoon. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/17/14 09:54 by TCnR. Also approximately where Bob and Ryan were located for many of their photos in these posts. The very large, older green building is off camera to the lower right, apparently ok. Most of the downtown area is to the camera right and is reported to be not damaged.
Note that the fire is said to have started near the north bound off-ramp of 97 from I-5. |
