A New York Central kind of day
Author: rfprr1

The URHS (NJ) hosted an open house at their yard in Boonton, NJ today. Star of the show was newly painted NYC E8 4083.
Right next to it was NYC's 20th Century Limited obs car Hickory Creek. Kudos to the URHS for hosting such a fantastic event.

First thought on the "Bluebird": YIPES! but, upon further review, it looks a lot happier than the NYC Black, and the fact that they managed to keep it running and give it a coat of hi-gloss means props for them!

Mongo like. Mongo never cared for the "cigar band" scheme over black. Aqua looks so much better.

That was an experimental scheme that never made it, probably faded, it looks horrible. I liked the cigar band, gray E units on mail trains in the PC days. They still had a few E7s running around in the Cigar Band logo.

Was that engine previously at a Nashville, TN museum?

That,s what I thought, a color that is going to look a lot worse when it gets dirty but obviously attracts attention in the rotating retro world.

Too many portholes for one thing. Also the thin wires all over the unit...like Christmas light strings? Sheeesh!

Very nice, is that the same shade of green that Penn Central used for some of its freight cars?

Could all the thin wiring we see on #4097 be part of a security system? Where is this E-8 displayed?

"NYC#4097" was originally PRR#5762, next PC#4262, and finally MBTA #4262.
There is no rear truck on the unit.
It is displayed in Duanesburg, NY.

And it has been shortened a little.
Wiring Christmas lights.

There's an E8 in Bellevue, Ohio that could be a donor for a truck...

If this color is correct, it's more of a jade green (than a PC Green) developed during NYC days. IIRC, someone from the engineering department (his wife) came up with the color. But perhaps some PC box cars had it.

There are a handful of cab units already painted in NYC "lightning stripe" in various places. It's not bad to see something different.

Also, #4097 is owned by a private individual who displays it on his rural property. I believe he had aspirations to turn it into an ice cream parlor or something, which is why there are extra portholes and probably explains the Christmas lights as well.

According to another source, this is the original NYC 4083 and yes it was tested in the jade green.
