Hearing of a derailment in Paris, Kentucky, not Hazard per se...a few coal cars tumbled into the river in or near Paris.

Edit: It would appear that the CSX line between Cincy and Corbin will be out of service until this one is cleaned up. The location is just north of the US 68 bridge in Paris, Kentucky. It's single track through that point. Plus one has to wonder how stable things are now in that whole area...

I haven't been to Paris in over 5 years and I was on business at that time and didn't to any train watching at that time. Decided to take a Google look at the area and I think I found the problem.

Oh well. Sometimes their stitching process just doesn't work quite right.

Progress as of 2:30 today. A CSX employee said this has been a 10 MPH for a while. Just tamped the ballast on Sunday. At one time this was double track. They are swinging the track over to the where the second track once was until the roadbed is repaired.

From the looks of things CSX is very lucky that the locomotives didn't go off when the ground shifted. It also appears that CSX should have built a retainer wall with the track running so close to the river bank. They may have been penny wise and pound foolish as the saying goes. I'm just glad that no one was injured.

It was reported on another site that an ethanol train had passed the same area 1/2 hour or so before the hopper train came through.

Could have been an oil train.

Let's all be thankful it wasn't! That would've made quite the splash with the media, and many not so good things for the fish

I believe it was reported as a 10mph derailment. I would hope at that speed, an oil train wouldn't be a major problem, even with the tumble down the river bank.

The RR's have GOT to start thinking about this, and either shore up their roadbed considerably, or route trains like oil and ethanol more safely. I feel they are putting their heads in the sand regarding the political and financial fall-out if an oil train derails into a river that supplies drinking water.

UP is now hauling oil trains down their I-5 corridor thru the Sacramento River canyon, and BNSF is doing so along the Feather River canyon, both in California. Both of these lines have "shelf" roadbeds like this one, and if an oil trains topples in to the water and busts open, the financial pain will be severe. Add to that CA is in a drought, and every drop of water counts, not to forget the environmental groups watching everything. UP's line alone thru the Sacramento river canyon has several very slim / vulnerable areas where the roadbed is right next to the river, and several places have already some failures in the past during high water times, or when trains derailed.

As crazy as this sounds, they could haul all the oil they want into California, but using a longer route via Tehachapi. That means UP would have to accept trains from CP, but run them backwards and down the LA&SL line, which is mostly desert, and then over Tehachapi, which is mostly desert. Yes, there are watersheds along that way, but not nearly as exposed as the ones in California. BNSF could do the same--they both share Tehachapi. Longer? Yes. Less exposure to risk? I believe so.

Looking at that GOOGLE EARTH photo, you'd think CSX would choose the line AWAY from the river, and utilize that unused portion of the RR bridge seen in the upper part of the picture.

Word is the track will be moved back in its original alignmnet after the slide is repaired.

I am new to TrainOrders so I hope there is a probationary period before I get jumped on for mistakes. I was following and got some pictures of CSX 942 leading 318 with an alcohol train through Ashland KY and taking the Big Sandy south last Saturday. I thought at first it was an oil train but checked the placard and it was alcohol. It didn't stop at the refinery so have no idea of its destination. I haven't mastered loading pics yet but tried posting last Saturday. Apparently CSX has a lot of alcohol to move that they are using both of these lines.

Just maybe the sewer line was leaking and had the soil soft and when the train went over it, it was all over. upkpfan

Coach's thoughts above on the disastrous political consequences (for the railroads) of a large oil spill into a major river are spot on. Not all (most?) tank cars in use are not built to the newest safety standards. And would the newest tank cars survive intact a derailment like the one depicted in this thread or the recent derailment in the Feather River Canyon?

The idea that oil trains should take routings, even if circuitous, which avoid travelling along major rivers as far as possible seems to me an idea worth considering.

It seems like there are more derailments over Tehachapi than over Donner or the Feather River Canyon, maybe not a better route either. (Far more trains run over Tehachapi than the other routes though).
