Western Railroad Discussion > Dusk at Ludlow & a road report from the Needles Sub.Date: 02/28/15 21:17 Dusk at Ludlow & a road report from the Needles Sub. Author: DonWinslow All 3 shots taken at Route 66 in Ludlow, California at the National Trails crossing.
I just returned this past week from a trip to the Needles Sub. The highway (Route 66) is now open from Ludlow, eastbound to Chambliss which is the turnoff to Cadiz. At that point the road is barricaded and closed. This is due to damage from summer storms. I did take the maintainer's road from Amboy to Cadiz which is a soggy mess in cetain areas. 4wheel drive is recommended for this route. Even some of the BNSF vehicles got stuck and had to be pulled out on this route. No indication when the road east of Chambliss will be open. There is a new resort being built at Chambliss which really looked quite nice and would make a good base camp for those that would like to photograph the area. This was a complete surprise as I had no idea that this was planned. Chris Date: 02/28/15 21:47 Re: Dusk at Ludlow & a road report from the Needles Sub Author: gjc Beautiful set of photos! I'm curious about the new resort that is being built at Chambliss. Like you said; it would be a nice base camp for railfanning that area.

They had cabins, buildings and a large pool in front. Don't remember seeing a name on it yet. I only saw it as we left because I got to Cadiz via the maintainer's road. If you've been out to Chambliss, just west of Cadiz Rd, there has been a fire truck parked there for years. This resort is right next to the fire truck which is on the south side of the highway. Don Winslow Glendora, CA http://www.donwinslow.net/Railroads Date: 03/01/15 03:24 Re: Dusk at Ludlow & a road report from the Needles Sub Author: MrMRL Who issuing the tickets? I was passed by SBD Co Sherrif, SBD Co. work trucks, BNSF MoW vehicles, and other private vehicles along that "closed" stretch a few weeks ago. Spent all afternoon driving back and forth between Danby and Fenner, saw nothing but friendly waves along Rte 66.
I'm not saying they (someone) aren't actually ticketing, and that it isn't wrong to drive around the very obvious ROAD CLOSED signs, just genuinely curious. Mr. MRL Edited 2 time(s).
