Installing a new switch on the St Croix Sub
Author: kbehling

These photos where taken last week near Prairie du Chein WI on the BNSF.
I believe there was 8 cranes lifting.
They are very long and have moving frogs.
Does anybody know what the turnout speed is rated for?

The standard crossover switch on BNSF is a No.24 turnout which is good for 50MPH under 100 TPOB and 40MPH over 100 TPOB.

Any estimate of how much the assembly weighs?

They even have the switch motors installed.

Track speed is actual 5 mph less?  Little cushion when you come in hot.

Neat pic.  It's like a synchronized dance!  Almost reminds me of the YouTube videos of the 'dinosaurs' in Cleveland - the Hulett machines, unloading the ore boats.

Tons Per Operative Brake, a guide to how much braking capacity a train has.
A loaded unit train will be way higher than 100, many intermodals, autos, and empty unit trains well under.
Manifests can be either way depending on how many empties.

However the speed vs. frog number is only partly right, the length of the switch points and the rest of the track geometry has to be right.
Another common speed is 45 MPH on the diverging sides of a No. 20 with 39-foot points.  I always thought that combination rode and wore well.

To me this looks like the MOW Crew's version of the Rockettes.    Nice pics.

After seeing these photos of a switch change, I will never again complain when I have to do it on my own layout!!!

The speed table provided by out_of_service is for passenger trains, I think.  The freight speed is usually 5 or 10 mph lower.  If the speed for a #24 is 50 mph on BNSF, I would guess that's for freight.  Does anyone know what the passenger speed on a #24 is?  55 mph?  Or 60, perhaps?

Per information back in March as I reccall, CP 2791 is good for 60 under 100 TOB and 45 over 100 TOB.
