CPR Chicagoland Derailment on CNR at B12

Officials were working through the morning Tuesday to clear up a railway intersection where a freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed, blocking a set of Metra Tracks.

Service along Metra's Milwaukee District West line, in west suburban Franklin Park, was restored as of 6:30 a.m. but would move at what Metra officials refer to as "walking speed" near the accident site, according to Metra spokesman Patrick Waldron.

North Central line service was also back to making its normal stops after temporarily making stops at some of the Milwaukee District stations throughout the morning, Waldron said. Commuters could expect slow-downs near the site of the derailment as well, he said.

About 22:30 CST Monday night, a Canadian Pacific Railway freight train headed north on the Canadian National Railway derailed where the railroad intersects Metra's Milwaukee District West line, the B12 crossing in Franklin Park, the suburb's Fire Chief David Traiforos said.

Three of the train's cars derailed, two of which were carrying hazardous materials, according to Traiforos. No one was injured in the accident, Traiforos said.

Waldron said local emergency officials gave the rail system the all clear since none of the Metra track had been damaged, according to Waldron.

Two of the derailed cars were turned on their side, one carrying sodium hydroxide and the other ethanolamine, according to Traiforos.

In addition to making their normal stops, trains on the North Central line were stopping at some of the Milwaukee District West stations, starting at River Grove, to accommodate commuters, Metra spokesman Tom Miller said.

A gas line used to heat the tracks was also ruptured, and had been since shut off, Traiforos said.

The third rail car involved was carrying lumber, according to the chief.

The cause of the accident was unclear early Tuesday, but Traiforos said a weakened portion of the track might have set off a chain reaction that led to the cars derailing.

Traiforos said the intersection has been the site of several other accidents in the past. He described the area as largely industrial, with some businesses nearby. Those establishments were not evacuated as result of the derailment, but were asked to stay inside for safety reasons.

Metra's Milwaukee West line stretches between Chicago and Big Timber Road in Elgin. The North Central Service moves between Chicago and Antioch.

Waldron said peak ridership for the inbound Milwaukee District West line reaches an average of 17,000 during morning hours.
