UPRR CA Derailment Disrupted Freight, Amtrak Service

Amtrak and Union Pacific freight service was disrupted in California Friday after a UP train derailed in the early morning hours south of Soledad.

According to reports, the last four cars of a 52-car train left the rails and spilled their loads of rock. There were no hazardous materials involved and no injuries reported as a result of the derailment.

Trackage for approximately one-eighth of a mile preceeding the crash had been damaged and required the replacement of ties.

Two Amtrak passenger trains were scheduled to pass through the area. The Coast Starlight, which departed in the morning from Los Angeles, had to stop in San Luis Obispo, Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said. Passengers were taken by bus to Oakland. The southbound Coast Starlight had to stop in Oakland, where it turned around to head north again, Graham said.

Graham said Friday evening that the company did not know if schedules could be resumed Saturday.
