Tri-Rail Service Disrupted by Speed Restrictions

Tri-Rail evening rush hour service was disrupted Wednesday after inspectors ordered immediate speed restrictions on a key segment of track in Broward County, Florida.

The speed limits were ordered after CSX Transportation, which owns and controls track maintenance and dispatching on the 72-mile South Florida rail corridor, and federal inspectors discovered deficient cross-ties that needed to be immediately repaired, said CSX spokesman Gary Sease.

CSXT ordered the 10-mph restrictions in the area between Cypress Creek and Deerfield Beach stations shortly after noon, disrupting all evening rush-hour service, said Tri-Rail spokeswoman Bonnie Arnold.

Sease said CSX immediately dispatched crews to replace the ties. He said CSX hopes to complete the work overnight and lift the 10 mph speed-limits before Tri-Rail's rush-hour commuter trains hit the corridor Thursday morning.
