CSXT Southend Sub Reopened Following Bridge Repair

After two days of bridge repairs near Selma, North Carolina, CSX Transportation's Southend Subdivision will be reopened today with both freight and Amtrak passenger train service expected to resume operations.

"We're back in service (today)," said Cliff Black, Amtrak's director of media relations.

Rail service came to a halt Wednesday night at mile 151 of the Southend Sub after CSXT inspectors discovered a weakened bridge support over the Little River about 10 miles north of Selma. CSXT estimated repairs will be completed today, Black said. CSXT freight traffic was rerouted to other CSXT lines and to Norfolk Southern rails in an effort to detour trains away from the busy north-south Southend Sub. to allow bridge repairs.

Amtrak's Carolinian, which runs between Charlotte and New York, and the Palmetto, which runs between Savannah, Ga., and New York, were stopped in Rocky Mount, and passengers were put on buses for the remainder of their trips. The trains then were returned to their points of origin, Black said.

All trains scheduled to operate south of Rocky Mount were canceled Thursday, including the Silver Star, Silver Meteor and Auto Train.

Passengers affected by the delays and closure are being offered refunds and travel on future dates and can call (800) USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak.com for schedule information and train status updates.
