CN Derailment in Potterville, MI Being Assessed

A CN Rail derailment in Potterville, Michigan is being assessed this morning after more than a dozen cars left the tracks on Thursday night.

According to reports, the CN Rail freight train derailed fifteen cars in the center of Potterville, the same location as a derailment in May of 2002 that displaced some 2,200 residents. Thursday night's derailment occurred shortly before 21:30 EST and involved no hazardous materials.

The train reportedly carried only one haz-mat tank car, which was not part of the fifteen-car derailment. There were initial reports of voluntary evacuations immediately after the incident, however nobody was asked to leave their homes.

While specific details of this derailment were still being obtained, there was mention of damage to a grain elevator adjacent to the CN Rail mainline.

Sheriff Michael Raines reports that the derailment happened in the same area as the derailment back in 2002. Four years ago, in May of 2002, a train derailment turned that community into a ghost town for days. Potterville's 2,200 residents were evacuated during that situation while hazmat crews removed liquid propane and sulfuric acid from the rail cars.
