Private Rail Experience
Chicago to Washington DC Round Trip - Oct 18-21, 2019
ATTENTION, LEAF PEEPERS! Come and join private cars BERLIN and FRANK THOMSON (ex 1949 Pennsylvania Railroad blunt end sleeper lounge observation) for a four day scenic excursion timed to coincide with the peak of vivid Fall colors, and the breathtaking mountain views that can only be experienced from the train. Smarter Travel ranks the Capitol Limited route between Pittsburgh and Washington DC as one of the 15 Most Scenic Amtrak Train Routes in North America.
Friday October 18 – Our private cars depart Chicago at 6:40 pm behind Amtrak’s Capitol Limited with a Welcome Aboard get together and light hor d'oeuvres. For our entire trip to Washington DC, the observation end of the FRANK THOMSON will be at the very end of the train, where you can take in a panoramic view of the ever changing scenery as it vanishes behind us! The curved rear side windows of the FRANK THOMSON allow for limited rearward viewing unavailable with traditional flat sided windows! Enjoy an evening nightcap before retiring to your private room to experience being rocked to sleep by rhythm of the rails.
Saturday October 19 - Wake up to the ever changing scenery of western Pennsylvania where we follow along the scenic Monongahela River after our stop in the steel city of Pittsburgh. A fresh cup of coffee and breakfast will be waiting for you in the Frank Thomson lounge, or you can choose to sleep in! Witness colorful mountain vistas as our train climbs to the summit of the Allegheny Mountains on the former Baltimore & Ohio Railroad before descending down "Seventeen Mile Grade" into Cumberland MD. Lunch will be served en route as we pass the historic towns of Martinsburg, Harpers Ferry and Point of Rocks while paralleling segments of the original Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath. We begin to enter Washington suburbs as our train approaches our destination at the spectacular Washington Union Station where our train is scheduled to arrive at 1:05 pm. After transferring to our hotel, the rest of the day is free to explore our nation's capital.
Sunday October 20 - The morning is yours to tour Washington DC. We suggest you plan to arrive back at Washington Union Station one hour before our scheduled departure at 4:05 pm. Again, the observation end of the FRANK THOMSON will be at the very end of the train the entire way to Chicago. Dinner will be served in the observation lounge after departure, enabling you to enjoy the panoramic views while dining! Evening snacks and beverages will be available until you retire to the privacy of your room for a good night's sleep.
Monday October 21 – Wake up to endless Coffee and a Continental Breakfast as our train speeds through the flat farmlands of Indiana. Our train is scheduled to reach its final destination of Chicago at 8:45 am. Goodbyes will be said as all passengers will disembark at Chicago Union Station with many fine memories of our trip.
