Things are moving along with preparations for our private railcar excursion from Los Angeles to Kansas City and return, set for March 29 through April 4.

Space remains available in both double occupancy bedrooms and single occupancy roomettes in the sleeping car “Pacific Sands“. Our private railcars will be available to use as hotel space in Kansas City, parked handily at Union Station, with shops, restaurants, museums all close at hand.

We have decided to call it the “California Limited” as that train has a special connection to Walt Disney. Two days of our visit will highlight Walt’s time in Kansas City as well as his boyhood home in Marceline, Missouri.

In July of 1923, Walt went west, leaving Kansas City for Los Angeles. He later said, “It was a big day when I boarded the Santa Fe train, the “California Limited”.” His business ventures in Kansas City had failed but he was determined, and hoped to find new employment in the movie business out west. Tuesday, March 31 will see us visiting some of the sites of those businesses in town as well as other Disney related history.

While today’s Amtrak train may be called the “Southwest Chief“, the schedule it keeps is close to that operated by the Santa Fe in days gone by as the “California Limited”. Don’t forget, Wednesday, April 1, Amtrak has agreed to make a special stop for us in Marceline at the former Santa Fe station, now the Walt Disney Hometown Museum. We will enjoy visiting here as well as some hometown meals!

Speaking of meals, our chef has been busy with meal planning for the trip. Most of the meals will be served in a first and second seating in the dining room of the “Yerba Buena“.

A tentative menu may be something like this:

Sunday, March 29 – Dinner will be served shortly after departure from Los Angeles. Taking a cue from the location of Los Angeles Union Station across from the historic Olvera Street, a Mexican meal featuring homemade enchiladas will start our journey, along with plenty of ice cold cervezas (beer) and margaritas!

Monday, March 30 – Feel free to sleep in late as we start our day with Brunch, featuring Pulled Pork Whiskey Pancakes and more! Coffee, tea, fruit juice and plenty of mimosas will be enjoyed. With Brunch mid morning, there will be a classic afternoon tea offered departing from Las Vegas, New Mexico. Expect lots of temptations including an assortment of pastries from Porto’s Bakery in Burbank.

Dinner tonight honors several items of note. The “California Limited” was the first passenger train on the Santa Fe to offer meals aboard the train, presented by the Fred Harvey Company. Previously passengers enjoyed meal stops at Harvey Houses along the way, with excellent standards of service and cuisine. In 1949, when Walt Disney and animator Ward Kimball were heading east from Pasadena to visit the Chicago Railroad Fair to see the many vintage locomotives in operation there.

Ward told the story of their first dinner in the dining car that night. He was looking forward to enjoying the Beef Stew served aboard as the chefs would crisp the beef used in preparation. He had heard of it and was looking forward to trying it that night. According to Ward, Walt ordered the filet of beef steak. When he heard that Ward wanted the beef stew, he was aghast! “No, no… He will will have the filet as well.”, Walt told the steward.

Our chef will prepare the classic Fred Harvey Company “Plantation Beef Stew with Buttermilk Biscuits as the highlight of dinner tonight.

Tuesday, March 31 – Our excursion arrives into Kansas City this morning with another famed Santa Fe dining car favorite to be enjoyed at breakfast – French Toast À La Santa Fe, perfected by Santa Fe dining car chefs back in 1918! Lunch and dinner will be on your own in Kansas City, with plenty of options to enjoy. And this evening, we head off for some Tiki (mis)adventures at Tikicat! But don’t stay out too late, as…

Wednesday, April 1 – At 7:28 am, the Southwest Chief departs eastbound for Chicago. Amtrak has agreed to make a special stop for us in Marceline at the former Santa Fe station, now the Walt Disney Hometown Museum. We will enjoy visiting here as well as some hometown meals! This evening we board the westbound Southwest Chief for the trip back to Kansas City.

Thursday, April 2 – This is your free day to explore Kansas City! Take advantage of the FREE Kansas City Streetcar to explore. If Major League Baseball is your interest, the Kansas City Royals home opener is scheduled for today. Whatever you find to enjoy, plan to be back for our departure this evening at 10:42 pm on the rear of the Southwest Chief!

Friday, April 3 – This morning finds us heading west through Colorado into New Mexico over the famed as well as scenic Raton Pass cresting the southern Rockies. A hearty breakfast will be enjoyed along the way, with a lunch buffet planned for the afternoon. Dinner this evening will feature a chef’s selection from shopping in Kansas City.

Saturday, April 4 – If the Southwest Chief is on time in to Los Angeles, we arrive at 815 am. A continental breakfast will be served, if the train is on time. If not, we plan to offer a more substantial meal as we conclude our excursion.

Traveling along with us will be Disney historians, Todd Pierce and Michelle Valladolid. In Kansas City, another Disney historian, Dan Viets, has offered to be our guide as we visit the Disney sites.
