GE Test Engines in Denver
Author: PZRMN

The GE test engines are in Denver as reported earlier. One is a 6000 hp unit that is part of a Chineese order, another is a Dash9, both in gray paint, the GE test car GECX 100 and a boxcar with parts.

Here is a shot of all of them together.

Thanks PZ for posting those photos!

I sure would like to get up there and check them out
once the Moffat wreck clears up.

Can someone PLEASE do a photoshop on this thing and put a regular cab on with the cowl. It would look pretty cool unlike this chinese sausage thing.

Interesting Cab

Chinese unit has good cab visibility. Sorry to see they didn't paint it in China National Railway scheme. Note the Co-Co trucks. Good to see GE competing in the world locomotive market.

Curious hat the dash nine has a Santa Fe 'gullwing' cab.

I don't think that test car is their usual "Gemini" car, is it? Wasn't "Gemini" GECX 90? - - - - - - - - - JLH

Where's the fuel tank for the Chinese engine?

It might have been rebuilt from a wrecked unit. Such as the BNSF 4499 wrecked at Bellemont, AZ on 10/13/00, you get the picture.

That Chinese unit is not one of the 6000hp locos, it is one of 78 3800hp C38AChe units for service in Tibet. Confirmed by Sean Grahm-White of the Loconotes list.

Thanks for the correction and the info.

Hmm.. that GECX 905 with that gullwing cab looks VERY ex-ATSF, right down to the road number (not the lettering style, which is UP-esque). Any one have any clues as to the whereabouts of former ATSF 905?

Thanks to PZMRN for posting these awesome photos.

For those who asked, GECX 100 is a GE dynamometer/instrument car that dates back to at least the mid 70s of GE heritage, if not earlier. This photo is the first I've seen of this car in a primer-compatible new paint scheme!

To note, GE has another test car - the GECX 90 "Gemini" as well.
Anyone have more "dope" on either of the GE test cars?

Cheers,
Harry

Seems that the fuel tank is hiding *behind* the air reservoirs on the side.

Since the Chinese units will soon be serving in Tibet, hmm.. maybe this set will head up onto the Front Range for some high altitude testing right around Moffat Tunnel (like similar test sets have done in recent years)?

Cheers,
Harry
