EMD, GM, GE and the Economy
Author: ColoradoRailfan

Hello-

With the threat of GM possibly going under (and never resurfacing), it seems like a very good thing that EMD was sold off to private companies (investment firms, right?).

I was wondering how EMD - now on its own - is dealing with the slumping economy? What about GE? Anybody know if either manufacturer is at serious risk of going under at this point? (Obviously GE as a whole probably isn't in any danger, but what about the locomotive division? Possibility of being sold off like EMD?)

Even if EMD was still owned by GM, if GM failed a profitable subsidiary like EMD with a viable business model would be sold off as an asset and would still be in business.

Well here is my post from today, when I was by EMD... It looks really busy, as there its lots of Euro units, and a few North American Engines going there as well. This year, its been lots of orders for Euro units out of EMD, and Kits sent down to Mexico for North America.

Point taken John! Just hope they continue to maintain that viable business model.

This is what EMD is offering in Europe. You could think of it as an SD69 in a much smaller carbody and double ended cabs.

Why do Europeans prefer full width bodies? Doesn't the superior bidirectional visibility and far easier maintenance access of the hood body matter to them? We figured that out in only a bit over a decade.

With 2 cabs, one on each end, the Engineer changes cabs for anything more than a minor backup move.

Ok..That's just F**king ugly...
I spent 5 years in Germany while with the Army...never did get into those ugly trains over there. And they're so quiet. Nothing compared to likes of an SP or Santa Fe climbing Tehachapi back in the mid 80's.
