Scanning Question? Check This Out
Author: nomosantafe

I'm a complete neophyte (translation: totally ignorant) when it comes to photo scanning. I'm trying to learn though, and I'd like to share some information that was shared with me.

WSC (formerly Whiskey Sierra Charlie on this board) suggested that I look at this website:

http:scantips.com/

It's called "A Few Scanning Tips" by Wayne Fulton
Scanner Help Basics 101

Fulton does not recommend saving photos as JPEG's for archival purposes. See the following:

http:scantips.com/basics09.html

"Graphics Files format - which File to Use"

This is an interesting website, and answered a lot of MY questions. I hope this is helpful to others.

The JPEG format is best for files you wish to transfer or share with others. By it's very nature it is a "lossey" compression and much detail is lost in the process. Depending upon the platform you are using, the best is probably TIFF. It is also generates the largest files. If you save your archives as JPEG's, you will limit yourself in what can be done with the file later, as data is lost when compressing the file into various formats.
