Is there a difference?
Author: poffcapt

I was reading a UP abandonment notice for an 0.8-mile section of the Yakima Industrial Lead near Midvale. The notice mentions Washington Central Railroad Company (WC) in connection with UP, and Central Washington Railroad Company (CWRR) in connection with BNSF.

What's the difference between WC and CWRR? Thanks.

Quoting the link:

"In its notice, UP states that it granted the Washington Central Railroad Company (WC) local trackage rights over the line. With UP's concurrence, WC sold the trackage rights it had over the line to BNSF Railway Company (BNSF). BNSF, in turn, assigned these rights to the Central Washington Railroad Company (CWRR)."

Most of us are used to using WCRC (the reporting marks) for Washington Central, but in any event, the WCRC was merged into BNSF in 1996 when it moved to reopen Stampede Pass. The Central Washington (reporting marks CWA) was subsequently created to run the branchlines which the BNSF did not actually wish to take over from the WCRC merger.

So, same owners (the Temples), different railway.

Thanks for that. I figured it had something to do with corporate name changes, but wanted to be sure.
