The last Roustabout
Author: roustabout

UP Albany Roustabout was abolished yesterday (9/03) and combined into a job out of Salem. This job will cover local work from Salem to Junction City, about 60 miles of mainline. Photos are of the Roust returning to Albany with the last three cars that they'll interchange to the Portland & Western at Albany. Utility Daryl is making the setout to track 10 for the last time. The other UP power in the images is assigned to either the P&W's Eugene Hauler or UP MPDPW/PWPD power.

Fewer and fewer shippers along this line. Saw on the news the other night that Weyerhauser there in Albany is closing down. They showed a filmclip on a centerbeam being loaded.

Thanks Lou, it's a shame to see this SP carryover go away. It was
always fun to see what power would show up for this train. I imagine
the train crew is sorry to see it go as well. Do you know any details
on the new train? I understand it will be a night job.

Which Weyerhaeuser operation is being shut down, the Trus-Joist plant? The big paper mill in Millerburg is already shuttered, which surprised me with all the new investment that went into that mill over the past few years.

I've heard no details and think a night job would not work out well. Utility Daryl in the second shot is bumping to the 'new' Salem job. Can't imagine him wanting to work nights.

Also, the Weyco mill (yes - the Truss-Joist plant) that is now shutting down is switched by the P&W. Sad to hear that it's gone (and 70 jobs lost). And it was only opened ten years ago, according to the local newspaper.
