Long Hood Ditch Lights
Author: schmo

Here are three photos of EMDs with ditch lights on their long hoods, that is, at the end of the long hood as well as at the end of their short hood.

Are there many other railroads besides DM&E, NS and Iowa Interstate that apply ditch lights to their locomotives' long hoods?

Appreciate the info!

BNSF puts them on the smaller units that might work locals or road switchers.

Fordyce & Princeton GP28 #1805 (now MB 1806) hauling pigs from Bastrop, LA to Crossett westbound just east of Crossett, AR back in 2001.

Does the FRA require ditch lights on long hoods for units in certain types of service, or do railroads just apply them as an increased safety measure on their own?

Ditch lights are a requirement for speeds above 20 mph over public grade crossings per FRA rules.

The engine I use on my job, the UP9989 (a GP40-2), has ditch lights on the rear. But I'm working a main line local with a single unit so yo me that makes sense. The engine I had prior to this one, the UP2078, did not have ditch lights on the rear. Fortunately there was only one crossing we had to go over so it actually became a non-issue. I have noticed a lot of UP switch engines (SW1500s) have ditch lights on the rear but that makes sense to me also.

They need to update that to crossings that don't have protection, 20 MPH with bells and lights at the crossing and gates is nuts I think. Can open.

Amtrak has even added them to some of the 500 series GE's as well. Amtk510 recently pulled the Kelso Flyer Excursion from Barstow, CA to Kelso, CA long hood forwards due to battery issues with my namesake. Here's a link to a short video of it.

My favorite long hood forward shot, IAIS Westbound road freight near Atalissa, IA on Oct. 29, 2010.

I like one-unit-wonders; running backwards only makes it better, although the crew may disagree!

A lot of CN units have ditch lights on the rear, there are exceptions however. The 5500 series SD60F's, 2400 series C40-8M's, first order of Dash 9's, IC SD70's and IC C40-8W's(ex-LMS) do not have rear ditch lights. Also, some of the CN 9400-9500's don't have them. I might be leaving a few out...

Every rebuilt Wheeling & Lake Erie engine has ditch lights on the rear.

A lot of UP GP38-2s have them on the long hood end, and probably a number of GP40-2s. KCS has them on the AC4400CWs and a bunch of their 4 axle units. Even the Missouri & Northern Arkansas has some on 4 axle units.
