Delayed intermodal trains out of LA Basin on UP
Author: bradleymckay

Heard on the street: Due to a large surge in traffic UP has told intermodal customs to expect some delays on the movement of their traffic out of the LA Basin terminals (LA, LC, CI). UP will run several extra's to reduce volume over the next few days. However, equipment supply is extremely tight, especially well cars for domestic traffic (53 foot). Apparently any 53 ft well sets now in "soft" storage around the west are to be immediately routed to LA.

Hope this info is valid! Comes from a pretty good source...

Last weekend they were sending repo empties out of the harbors as fast as they could get power for them. There were cars tied down at Walker siding, El Monte siding, Carson siding, Rioco siding, Montclair yard along with 2 repos to Yermo and one to Kelso. I had one of the Yermo repos out of Global South on Sunday afternoon. APL was in a hurry to get us out of there to make room for inbounds from the east (U.S. east, not the far east).-BMT

Is this the start of the "Christmas Rush" or some kind of "blip" in the economy???

I don't believe the rush, on UP, is in the movement of marine containers. As Brian noted there are still alot of the 40 ft well cars not being used to their full potential. Maybe on BNSF since they serve two huge maritime companies in Maersk and MSC, but not on UP. We're not in the peak shipping season for marine containers yet. For domestic containers, though, things seem to be picking up. Hub Group, a MAJOR UP shipper, is still saying they believe a big pickup in their business will occur in the second half of the year. It's possible that it's starting to happen now...

FYI, the "Radum Job" out of Lathrop here in Northern California pulled a ~10,000' baretable train out of Radum to Lathrop today. Intermodal terminal at Lathrop is almost all domestic, so I wonder if this is related to the potential surge?

I hope this is true. Lookin' good for LA&SL and the Sunset Route.
