PV "Niles" Makes the NCRY to UP Interchange
Author: shed47

Business car "Niles" was interchanged today from the Niles Canyon Ry. to the Union Pacific at Hearst, CA for movement to new owner Oregon Pacific R.R. Built by Pullman in 1917 as El Paso & Southwestern 500 "Santa Rosa", later becoming SP 128.

NW2 SP1423 is seen shoving the Niles on the rare move across Pleasanton-Sunol Rd. this morning to the UP interchange track at Hearst. Within just a few minutes UP's westbound Permanente Local makes its appearance and the job briefing gets underway. The UP local showed up with five empties from Livermore--with the Niles added to the rear it will be mixed train time.

The Niles brings up the markers as todays Perm Local clatters across the diamonds at Niles Jct. Rather than heading straight down the Warm Springs Sub to Milpitas they pulled downs to Shinn and then backed down the south leg of the wye and shoved all the way to Milpitas taking advantage of that spacious rear platform. Mixed Train Daily on the Warm Springs Sub.

I truly hope the Ewe Pee doesn't run that car through the hump yard like they've done with a few other passenger cars.

Thanks for sharing. Would hope Photobob can watch her run through Dunsmuir. Whats the chance the UP puts her on the rear of a train?

Great series...is UP 1346 ex-Grande or WP?

Thanks very much for sharing those photos!

We can't wait until she arrives to her new home!

OPR owner Richard Samuels standing on the platform with the black jacket in the last photo. He and OPR's Kelly Anable drove down there to see it off and will be following it back up here on its journey.

Here's our detailed roster page if anyone wants to learn about the history of the "Niles" who's original and new name will return to "Santa Rosa".

Brian, people,

Did this PV ran on the SD&AE as a business car while Kyle was the operator?

Beautiful car!

Ex-SP. You can see where the SP light package used to be on the nose.

Looks like an ex-DRGW unit. No notch of the red gyralite.
But the plated over area does match a recessed dual gyralite installation like the DRGW and the WP used.

I feel so fortunate that you catch almost every interesting movement in the area while some of us toil in the rat race. Great report!

It will most likely go north out of Roseville on the 09-MRVHK.

As a high value load it commonly is placed just behind the power.

However, in this case, in order to minimize the buff forces from dynamic braking, OPR is requesting it to be on the rear with possible setout at Brooklyn rather than going on to Albina and having to come back to Brooklyn for delivery to the OPR.

I was working a switch job last night in Lathrop and saw her go by on the main line making up the rear of a train bound for roseyville. I was on the ground when the train passed and my engineer said on the radio "that trains got a single passenger car on the rear!" and I figured it was just a work train car being moved to roseville but low and behold it was the Niles!
