UP 4141 "Bush" redo's from 2008
Author: oyw

Looking through some older photos, I thought I would share a few pics of UP's George Bush commemorative SD70ACe 4141 doing what she was built to do, haul freight. Do a search here and you can find hundreds of posts about this ever-controversial but very attractive locomotive that has been mostly stored for the last several years. Not old enough yet for the Nostalgia Board, I redid some previously posted shots from 2008.

1) On September 7, the 4141 leads a West Colton to Dallas, TX manifest past the east switch at West Palm Springs on a beautiful summer day.

2) Less than two months later on October 8, the 4141 is eastbound on the LA Sub at Streeter (Riverside, CA) with 1996/1988/and 4512. The commemorative units had recently been on display in the LA area.

3) A few miles east near El Casco, the Bush unit leads the colorful KGSAP2 on the climb through San Timoteo Canyon.

Politics aside, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the 4141 finds her way back onto the main line once again, as always thanks for looking.

These are killing me Bob, 4141 is the only special Union Pacific unit I have yet to see. Great series, especially those last two.

That Air Force One paint scheme really looks great.

Only saw it a couple of times...passing thru Salem, OR., on the point southbound...returning north as a trailing unit...and at Van./Albina on the point heading for Marion, Ark....only times it was in the NW as far as I know...and it hasn't come back...only reason I caught it was I happened to turn on my scanner after coming home from church and heard 4141...it took a bit to realize what it was and then I only had a few minutes to get to the tracks...and there it was...it took the siding at Labish for Amtrak which gave me some time to get additional shots...

It should look great, it was designed by Raymond Lowey who designed the paint for the 707 Air Force One. Lowey also designed the two tone North Coast Limited paint for the NP as well as a number of other railroad projects.

Interesting that Raymond Loewy should design the paint scheme for UP 4141 since he's been dead for 26 years. Did he come back to do the job? ;-)

All kidding aside, he was a genius, designing among many other things the PRR GG1, S1 and T1 locomotives. He was a "form follows function" man and I can't think of anything he designed that didn't both look great and work great.

Have fun, be safe,
Doc Jones

Back when 4141 was new, I recall reading the paint was designed by a team of 3 designers based on Raymond Lowey's paint design for the 707 Air Force One.

Yes, Outstanding pictures once again Bob. Can you dig out stuff from the "boxes" as JB puts it so we all can see that yes, "oyw" has taken a bad shot like all the rest of us mere mortals!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, too, and love shot #3. Kinda ironic that 1996 and 1988 are coupled together in Roseville this week.

Of course, I look at pictures like this and have to wonder... what was I doing that day that I didn't get out to see it?

Yeah, I made a special detour to NLR while doing a Coast to Coast drive (to spend time with the new grandson), only to find out it was off on a lark to Iowa!

How cool is that? To have passed away so many years ago, and still have an influence on present day goings on... DeVinci comes to mind for some reason. Man, I want to matter like ThaT!!!!
