High Density Housing Meets Commuter Rail
Author: GrandeGold

While driving home from work this afternoon, I spotted a photo opportunity begging to be exploited. All that was missing is a commuter rail train.

Two or three minutes later and voila, a UTA test train from Provo arrived to complete the scene. High density housing meets commuter rail leading into downtown Salt Lake City.

Interesting composition. What else besides commuter trains run on those rails?

And the whining from the NIMBY's about the train noise will start on the second day of commute service.

The two tracks in the foreground are the former D&RGW mainline, but it seems that UTA didn't trust UP to dispatch commuter trains, so they built their own track adjacent to the UP, rather than lay an additional track for the UP to accomodate commutes. Interesting solution, and the Provo trains are to begin regular service by the end of the year.

I thought that it was the other way around - UP didn't want commuter trains interfering with freight operations.

Stacking people in little boxes. Neat.

High density? Medium at best. How far away is the nearest station?

It is high density for Utah that tends to build out, not up. The closest station is about 10 blocks away.
