Western Railroad Discussion > SP Black widows in morning sunDate: 11/08/12 18:22 SP Black widows in morning sun Author: SPB Former SP locomotives SD-9 #5472 and GP-9 #5623 both in black widow paint made a couple of test runs on the Niles Canyon Railway this morning. This photo was taken at Niles on a nice sunny morning. 5472 was originally assigned to Tehachapi freight service when it arrived on the SP in 1956. 5623 was one of the "torpedo boat" geeps that served in SP's San Francisco-San Jose commute service.

In 2006, the engines doubled headed on an all Harriman consist from Niles to within a mile of Verona Road. Mike Pechner Photo.
