Western Railroad Discussion > Goodbye Riverside local, we'll miss youDate: 11/16/12 20:30 Goodbye Riverside local, we'll miss you Author: z-trains My son made it a weekly habit to chase the UP Riverside local while my daughter was in gymnastics class. Here are several shots from 2009 showing different parts of the line going in order of how the local went to and from Colton.
#1) YWC86 has finished assembling its train and prepares to head down 9th St. to Congress St. yard. Notice the rare power that regularly showed up on the Riverside local. #2) YWC86 is powered by an ex-DRGW and ex-SP duo of GP's as it begins its climb up the steep grade in Grand Terrace, CA. #3) The Riverside local, powered by an ex-Cotton Belt GP unit, nears the diamonds with the BNSF San Jac line. More shots to follow. There are many more shots of YWC86 on z-trains.com and several videos on our YouTube page. Thanks, Paul and Zach www.z-trains.com RailfanJunction on YouTube Date: 11/16/12 20:33 Re: Goodbye Riverside local, we'll miss you Author: z-trains #4) YWC86 has entered the industrial park off of Atlanta St. in Riverside and proceeds to bring in a fresh cut of CEMEX cars for the cement industry.
#5) The Riverside local backs across Atlanta St. to retrieve empty CEMEX cars. #6) YWC86 pulls the empty CEMEX cars out of the cement industry and will back them onto the loads that remain on the "mainline." Thanks, Paul and Zach www.z-trains.com RailfanJunction on YouTube Date: 11/16/12 20:37 Re: Goodbye Riverside local, we'll miss you Author: z-trains #7) The Riverside local has backed the CEMEX empties out of the industrial complex and left them on the passing siding as it prepares to run around its train.
#8) YWC86 has come out of the passing siding and will back around to the other side of its train in order to deliver the plastics hoppers to the other industry in the complex. #9) The local has backed down to the plastics facility with loaded hopper cars and the empty CEMEX cars. It will pull the empty hoppers out and deliver the loads, after which it will assemble its train and head back to Colton. Thanks, Paul and Zach www.z-trains.com RailfanJunction on YouTube Date: 11/16/12 20:41 Re: Goodbye Riverside local, we'll miss you Author: z-trains #10) The Riverside local heads north across the bridge that carries it over the I-215. Ironically, the need to remove this bridge for the widening of the I-215 is the reason for the demise of this line since it was not cost effective to replace it.
#11) YWC86 is tied up just north of Congress St. yard as its crew has finished its work. The train will shortly be ferried into Colton Yard. #12) Another view of the Riverside local dropping down into the industrial park to switch the CEMEX facility. some nice shots of scarlet and gray SP -- ahhh -- as well as a wonderful shot of a Rio Grande loco still in Rio Grande paint! Way to go! That local got some great power! Date: 11/17/12 01:13 Re: Goodbye Riverside local, we'll miss you Author: defect_detector Probably some of the best coverage of the modern Riverside job, thanks for sharing.

Date: 11/17/12 09:00 Re: Goodbye Riverside local, we'll miss you Author: mapboy Excellent coverage! The place that gets the plastic pellets in covered hoppers is Sigma Stretch Film, and the cement place that receives box cars is Lehigh White Cement Div. of Lehigh Cement. The CEMX box cars are Cemex Mexico. The other Riverside Local customer that will eventually be served off the BNSF main by "West Colton" is Cascade Warehouse in Colton.

Date: 11/17/12 21:57 Re: Goodbye Riverside local, we'll miss you Author: TomPlatten Its getting harder to remember the sights of the Riverside local--back in the day-- continuing on into Riverside, crossing the UP and SF at old Riverside JCT and meandering all the way to Corona to switch lumber and reefers along the way. Yes we have missed you for a long time. Thank you for your great photo story!!!!
