Bakken Oil via the Utah Northern?
Author: stampedej

Anybody know if there would ever be a need to ship Bakken oil to Utah and/or California refineries via the U.P.'s Utah Northern line? I wonder if shipments could originate on the BNSF (ex-N.P.); hand off to the MRL; hand off to the U.P. at Silver Bow for movement south. This would certainly help boost traffic on this sleepy line.

BNSF has already shipped at least one train, if not more of oil, to California via their Inside Gateway in Oregon and California. No need from them to hand off the train to UP for most of the miles when they can ship it all on BNSF tracks or via their own trackage rights.

I suppose it would be considered if Wyoming and Utah refineries were out of crude but there is a lot of oil to be fracked in those states first.

If the UN line is used for Bakken oil it might provide incentive to reopen the Homestake line.
