Update on SP 1006 restoration at OERM
Author: TomPlatten

Rebuilding the cab is essentially done! It was pretty much trashed when we started! Much work is left to do before she is rolling down our main line. Maybe three more years!

What is that "Shutter" control for? and is the handle that is to the left in the last photo the reverser? Looks like a great restoration!

Manual radiator shutter control
Years ago I ran the SW1 and SW900 at Sun City Arizona at the auto loader facility as a contract engineer/mechanic. That thing would really get up and go and I loved the air throttle.
Great rebuild you are doing.

Opening and closing the radiator shutters up front, apparently. See the SW1/NW2 operating manual here:

It's for the drapes on the engineer's windows, helps keep out the California sun coming back from Perris!
It must be true I heard it on the Internet.

The handle lower center is the throttle. The handle kind of upper left is the engine shut down lever. Push the button and move the handle over and the engine will shut down.

Believe the very early switchers used a mechanical linkage between the throttle and governor and the separate shutdown lever worked in conjunction with that system.

Later single unit EMD switchers with the air throttle incorporated the shut down feature in the end of the throttle handle. Switchers set up for MU control used the 8-position notched throttle with the shut down button in the end of the throttle handle as well.
