Western Railroad Discussion > Another BNSF "Funeral Train" Heading East

Last week BNSF ran a train of old GP30s and such eastbound from Barstow, CA to the CSX in Chicago where they continued on to Larry's Truck and Electric (did I get that name right?) in Ohio.

Well, another identical train of 24 locos running 2x2 DP just left Barstow and is symboled DBARCHI1. Should be a daylight run across Arizona today.

I got a few photos of the train so people can see what's coming down the line this holiday weekend.

1) The 28-unit consist approaches Griffith, AZ on the Seligman Subdivision at dawn.

2) The train at Kingman.

3) There are indeed 3 LAJ-painted locomotives in the middle of the train.

Over the last couple weeks, many of BNSF's remaining 2400-2649 (GP30U, GP35U) loco numbers have been appearing and disappearing at Barstow as these units are transferring ownership between BNSF and LT&E. Arm chair tracking is being difficult to say the least.

Three at least are CF-7's.

Train came through Wichita on it way east the afternoon of the 12th (Monday).

So what is their fate when they reach LT&E?
Scrapping, rebuilding, leasing as is???

How would a train this size compare in weight to, say, a 100 car merchandise train? If you do the math with some assumed weights, the funeral train seems pretty heavy!

I just reviewed my video clips, and I have all the correct locomotive numbers, as there is quite a bit of deviation from the list above (which matches the list I saw earlier too).

a lot of weight but not very many axles of air brake. I bet it is sweet to run it with those DPUs, with all of that dynamic braking capacity.

Sure wish BNSF would preserve GP30U 2400 (ex Santa Fe 2700, 3200, 1200), as it was the "Class Engine".
