Funeral train across Central Illinois
Author: Q4960

I set out to catch the eastbound funeral train with 23 dead units and 4 live ones [2 on each end] on the BNSF - former Santa Fe line - about 3 miles west of Toluca, Illinois.

I asked on an earlier thread what their disposition was but did not get a reply.

some will be scrapped, some of the frames will go to be made into gensets, some will be rebuilt, some will be leased, some will just rust, and hopefuly some of the 30's will be saved!!!!

Just look at those little guys (compared to today's power), and remember they used to push and pull heavy freights over Tehachapi. Hard to believe now, isn't it?

Nice photos! I shot it about 10 minutes earlier by the detector at MP125. Video is on YouTube if anybody is interested. Just type in
the subject and you will find it.

I was over by LTEX on Thanksgiving morning and there was at least 1 GP30 sandblasted/primered ready for some new paint so there are a few being redone but the majority are being scrapped. As a side note LTEX recently acquired some new property in near-by Lordstown,Oh and this is where the scrapping of the 30's is taking place,rebuild/repaint still takes place in Mcdonald,Oh.
