UP Headquarters?
Author: wjpyper

I found this photo in a box that I had inherited from my late parents. It is dated 1967, with no other information. The large building in the background has the UP logo and a sign that says "General Offices." Is that UP Headquarters in Omaha?

Here's the replacement in the background....when you drive around Omaha, you sure know it's a UP town!

Yes, looking west on Dodge St. before the "new addition" was built on the east side in the 70s facing the Omaha World-Herald Building. Today the lot is vacant and the new headquarters building is across Dodge St on the left. JEB

Is it me, or does the new HQ look like a Maximum Security Prison building?

It's you. The building is very wide open with a spectacular atrium and views in every direction.

I'm talking about the outside when viewed from down the street. It just looks too institutional to me.

Union Pacific has been aggressively pursuing ways to reduce costs for heating and cooling. I believe the Union Pacific Center has applied for recognition as a LEED building, among the most energy efficient in the US. Less money spent on heating and cooling, more money for the right of way and the the shareholders.

Been a while since I was down that way but I believe that gated area is the entrance to the new ball field down town. Note the Gate 4 in the background.

That is a display recognizing that the railroad donated the land for the convention center/ball park from the former shops property.

As the old headquarters building was being demolished in 2008 the sign was uncovered which read General Offices Serves All The West. It had been covered up with the new addition that was constructed in the early 70's.
