UP1995 Eastbound on the Sunset Route
Author: cabcar

UP1995 is trailing on this Eastbound "Special" ~ SPGNO, passing through Redlands, Calif. around high noon today.

Cool looking train.

The 1995 was originally planned to be leader, but unfortunately was having problems communicating with EOT's, so the consist was wyed.

Ah -- truly a special cargo. From the on-line version of DOT's Emergency Response Guide 2012: Guide 112 for Explosives -- Divisions 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 or 1.5.
FIRE OR EXPLOSION MAY EXPLODE AND THROW FRAGMENTS 1600 meters (1 MILE) OR MORE IF FIRE REACHES CARGO.

(I am not shouting! The all caps is directly from the ERG!)

Good thing there's a buffer car! Haha ;)

The inbound West Colton crew (who got relieved at Rancho) sure had fun with this train, whenever they had a meet along the Mojave Sub:

"Lots of fireworks!"
"Yeah, no smoking!"

There was a second train that followed, led by UP 3952. Not sure where it originated, but same destination, and similar looking train. What's ironic is that it may have been delayed due to a fire on an SD60M in San Timoteo Canyon, on an eastbound Tucson bound manifest led by UP 7408. That incident brought out the firefighters and blocked both mains for a while.

Off topic, but SD60M had a bad day today. A 24xx or 25xx series (two window) one behind an SD9043MAC on the Mojave Flyer had its ground relay trip repeatedly, and they got stranded at Dike due to insufficient horsepower. Another SD60M (2279) went light engines out of West Colton to rescue it - let's hope that didn't run into any problems.

First time I have seen a coil car used as a buffer but, I guess that if you want to protect something from and explosion that would be the car you wanted to use.

It was just a convenient car to use. No thought other than that. If they were lucky it might actually be destined in the same area as the rest of the train, but then more than likely it is not. Usually it's just a matter of grabbing an easy car to get to.

The Port Chicago area used to (think still does) originate or receive coil steel loads. I remember seeing those unit trains on the BNSF over Tehachapi several years ago. Was probably the convenient car to use as a buffer in the area.
