Vommit Bonnet in Kansas
Author: bnsfsd70

Thanks to a timely heads from nikon1, I found out that the Kansas Power & Light (KPL) power in Topeka, KS today included the BNSF 9647. When I showed up a few hours later, I was able to catch them switching the unit to the point of the consist, to eliminate a 20 mile-long NS-style trip, running long-hood forward. This is the kind of locomotive hostling I'm ok with! Due to those crazy "work" commitments, I wasn't able to catch the unit with its train in tow, but I believe one Mr. MilwE70 did.

Unfortunately, the weather today was a little less than stellar, but I was still quite happy to be able to shoot this unit again. Say what you will, but I always liked this unit's paint job.

She's looking a bit tired. Is an H3 paint job in her future?

I hope not. This is one of the few things that keep me looking out the window at coal trains and rear dpu motors, alot is the same, but you have to watch it all to see the rare stuff.

Its going for its class over haul in Topeka. Good chance it might get repainted. Better get your pics now.

The 9647 is interesting because it's unique, but for a whole roster of locomotives, I'd still go with the color scheme worn by the majority of the units in the background of the first shot. Are those warbonnets in storage, or did you just get lucky to catch six red and silvers in the same place?

Oh, those are all 600/800's in storage, including "El Diablo," the 599. Trust me, if I caught a road train with that many warbonnets, there'd be a post about it.

If my choices were a whole roster like 9647 or a whole roster of power bar, I'd take 9647.

And a "Warpeach" with it. Good catch.

Caught the same move on a cloudy day with a cell phone camera. Photos were the best I could do pacing the train on a gravel road in low light.
