Western Railroad Discussion > Twin Cities Railfanning InfoDate: 12/30/16 08:21 Twin Cities Railfanning Info Author: Ohiorailfan I'll be headed that way in March for some railfanning. I have a few questions.
How do you get to Dayton's Bluff? *This a must see place for me* Can you still railfan Hoffman avenue or near it? Where and when is the best to see the Minnesota Commercial? Thanks! Date: 12/30/16 08:38 Re: Twin Cities Railfanning Info Author: King_Coal Hoffman Ave is a great place to see trains, but difficult to find a way to park to photograph. Lots of private property, which we all try to avoid. Even the side of the road (which must have been expanded since all those great BN, MILW, CRIP, CNW photos we see presented on this sight) is marked for "NO PARKING." There's a path on the opposite side of the four lane. Closest parking is perhaps 3/4 mile away. There's a viewing platform on Union Station property, so perhaps that works.
Attached is a photo from an early Sunday morning during December 2011 when there was nothing moving on the Warner Rd, adjacent to Dayton Bluff/Hoffman Ave.. I just parked on one side of the four lane and grabbed a photo. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/30/16 08:48 by King_Coal. Hoffman Avenue is essentially off limits, as commented on earlier. There are some places nearby you can shoot, but stay off CP property as you WILL be asked to leave. As for Dayton's Bluff; if you have a long lens, I would suggest getting on top of it as there are some very nice views from there. Go to Google Maps and type in Mounds Park, St. Paul, MN, in the search and you should find the best way to get there. I could make some suggestions, but it's been 40 years since I lived there and I haven't been back enough to keep up with all the changes. Hope this helps.
