few on the road home . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   just finished a nice eight day visit with the grand girls for spring break and heading home. Even though this is not a railfan trip per se, I am following the KCS most of the way a checking out a few spots here and there. Today was actually a pretty good day with a nice surprise thown in. First off in a case of good timing exited I-20 at the Vicksburg, MS exit for a relief stop only to find the rear of an eastbound KCS train coming off the ten mph restricted Mississippi River bridge so headed downtown catching him at one of the few grade crossings in town (top) then once again on the move west spotted a unit KCS hopper train leaving the first siding west of the bridge, Vidal, with Belles fore and aft but getting off the Fwy fifteen miles or so west at Waverly was almost blindsided but one of the many UP NS runthrough intermodals blasting out of the trees (middle). I always get off at Gibsland, LA to try and catch the LNW working but have only done so twice in thirty years but check down the line from their office found this set of four matched WAMX 40W's sitting on the main just south of town. Anyone know what this line that runs from Gibsland to Alexandria is called?

.   .   .   the view from the other end (top), On arrival Ashdown found that Kiamichi has some big power parked adhacent the office in Ashdown (middle). Unfortunately another Kiamichi job was just clearing the KCS main at the crossing in Ashdown but there was no way to get to the head end after a couple of unsucessful tries. Just after leaving town had to make a hasty U and beat this southbound Herzog ballast train approaching the KRR diamond in Ashdown (bottom).

.   .   .   and the nice surprise was while crossing over the DQE line from Dierks to DeQueen at Lockesburg saw the rear cars of a westbound heading into perfect afternoon sun. I had only caught a train on this line in the morning previously but am "guessing" there is a second train in the afternoon that goes beyond DeQueen to the next large paper mill at Valliant, OK? Caught him and the sizeable train a few miles east of DeQueen (top) and again arriving the yard at DeQueen (middle) and lastly ten miles short of our destination for the night in Mena this southbound oil train was passing through Wickes (bottom) to end our day of travel home.
