Western Railroad Discussion > Some lease, pool and new power from a week ago…

Not much for being timely these days, but I did have a fairly decent day out last Sunday (April 9). My intentions were to spend the morning up around Victorville but heavy cloud cover to the north forced me to stay close to home where it was only partly cloudy.

1) Being a slow morning and knowing the UP Crestmore Local has been using a red Helm leaser, I caught up to them at the Pacific Ave crossing in Rubidoux. HLCX 1032 and UP 1499 along with 9 empty center-beams are on their way to the yard at Mira Loma.

2) After some switching, the local shoves 14 tank cars up the Dixon Lead to the Coca Cola syrup plant in Ontario. By now the high clouds had intensified and I went home.

3) After a few hours, the skies cleared and I decided to go back out. It was around 3PM when a very late UP West Colton to North Platte manifest prepares to crossover from the UP to the BNSF at Keenbrook in Cajon Pass. Trailing the three UP units are CSXT 7860 and KCS 3928.

A few minutes later I received word that UP Tier-4 SD70 3012 would soon be leaving West Colton to Salt Lake City manifest. Once I caught up to him he was in the hole at Slover siding, waiting for three southbounds. This gave me extra time so I decided to try a new location, walking across a field in North San Bernardino near Baseline Ave.

4) There was still plenty of sunlight when the train finally showed sometime after 5PM. This was my first time photographing the new Tier-4 model.

5) Through the weeds, a going away shot showing some of the carbody detail.

6) Lastly, I followed the train back up to Keenbrook for a broadside roster shot of the 3012. It’s looking like the new Tier-4’s will soon become commonplace but getting them while clean is still an incentive.

Nice stuff!  Send some of that lease power along with a few days of sunshine our way when your done with it!!  Really love shot # 2 and the side view of the Tier 4.
