Western Railroad Discussion > West Valley Line: interchange at Tehama?Date: 04/21/17 08:25 West Valley Line: interchange at Tehama? Author: webmaster I was looking at Northern California Lines this morning with Google Earth and I was curious if there is any interchange of traffic at Tehama on the West Valley Line? Does the traffic for the line come at Tehama or does it all come and go from Davis?
Thank you for any info, Todd Clark Canyon Country, CA Trainorders.com Date: 04/21/17 08:38 Re: West Valley Line: interchange at Tehama? Author: TCnR All action is from Davis. apparently nothing goes on north of Corning. There is a report that a few rails are missing from the wye. Apparently UPRR doesn't want to set out cars in Tehama. Hamilton city branch is still in place but no signs of activity.
Drove through Corning last week and found the north end switcher and two cars sitting in town around 5 pm. there are a couple of active industries near the north end but they don't seem to have rail connections, kinda surprising so I'll keep looking. All the bridges appear to be in good order, no red flags. The obvious sag in that particular bridge is no longer visible. There was a report of a UPRR team making an inspection of the wye and the entire line during the recent problems with Oroville Dam. The routine is for the switcher out of Davis to carry cars and swap with the north switcher just north of Maxwell. There are lots of active industries south of Williams. Date: 04/21/17 08:49 Re: West Valley Line: interchange at Tehama? Author: ble692 Currently nothing goes via Tehama. The line is out of service from the south end of the bridge at the north end of Richfield (milepost 182 or so) to Tehama (milepost 186.1).
Here are some pictures of the situation as of 3/21/17. 1) Tehama looking south (or SP west) from the Tehama Ave crossing at milepost 186.1. 2) Tehama looking the other direction towards the UP Valley Sub. The switch originally was part of a wye. To the left still takes you towards Dunsmuir, while to the right took you to Roseville in the past but now dead ends just around the bend. 3) Richfield looking north from the Sonoma Ave crossing at milepost 181.8. It's hard to see, but a red flag is displayed between the rails in the distance just short of the bridge. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/21/17 08:53 by ble692. Author: ble692 I also noted that the last 4 sets of searchlights from Corning to Tehama are still in place, apparently due to the lack of traffic on that segment of track. South of Corning they have almost completely been replaced, or had new tri-light heads installed in place of the searchlight heads. The only other searchlights outside of that Corning to Tehama segment that are still in service are at Davis and at milepost 100.

I will share what perked my interest. Back in November a woman by the name Sherri Papini went missing near Redding and was found near Yolo off I-5 claiming she was abducted. Recent revelations about her past have raised questions as to whether the abduction was a hoax: http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article141599034.html After her disappearance nobody saw her until she was found. If it was a hoax without an accomplice she would have needed some anonymous transportation... such as a freight train. She lives in Mountain Gate where she said she was abducted. The Valley Subdivision runs through town and I believe there is the Gray Rocks siding here at 9350 feet long. She could have conceivably caught a freight here and rode it south. To get to Yolo she would have had to get off somewhere along the way. I was thinking she got off near Tehama and rode a freight car on the West Valley Line, but you guys threw that out. I suppose she would have to go up towards Roseville and caught a train to Davis and then up to Yolo.... highly unlikely that nobody would see her, let alone know where she was going. She could have hiked across the valley to Yolo from the East Valley Line, though once again unlikely as nobody saw her. Date: 04/21/17 10:22 Re: West Valley Line: interchange at Tehama? Author: callum_out It's a hike from a spot where the train would stop, most likely Tehama to maybe Richfield and you'd
have trouble getting into a car at Richfield as they're all inside the SPI facility. Out Date: 04/21/17 12:09 Re: West Valley Line: interchange at Tehama? Author: PacNWZ12 TCnR Wrote:

There are lots of active > industries south of Williams. There are two customers North of Corning that still get service. Eco-Shell a couple miles north of where they tie the locomotive down in Corning, and Sierra Pacific Industries in Richfield. Between Corning and Williams there are 5 or 6 more active customers. Date: 04/21/17 18:57 Re: West Valley Line: interchange at Tehama? Author: TCnR Drove past this afternoon and saw that switches are in place and some cars at the two industries.
Yep, also noted the meal red flag just before the bridge. I was interested in a photo with the searchlight signals, not much action out there though. Date: 04/22/17 00:59 Re: West Valley Line: interchange at Tehama? Author: coach It's a crying shame that line isn't currently used by UP. Look at it--it was built by SP for speed: flat, fast, few curves and lots of tangent running. Easily a 70 mph railroad, and it avoids lots of congestion that UP now has in Chico, Marysville, Lincoln and Roseville.

Has not been 70 MPH track since some time in the 70's at the latest if not the 60's. Was 40 MPH when I was a student at Chico in the early 80's. |
