Western Railroad Discussion > KP Traffic Denver to SalinaDate: 04/23/17 16:13 KP Traffic Denver to Salina Author: kpline Just inquiring, how much traffic uses the KP from Denver to Salina these days? I know there is a daily eastbound autorack that uses it. Not sure of the frequency of the DVSI/SIDV(have heard twice a week?) And the occasional grain train and once in a while a coal train, also the Denver to Limon local(not sure on the frequency of that either). Traffic on the entire KP line is down to about nothing these days. Was posted on another site a few nights ago that the G&W might be taking a look at the line. Havent seen any official statement that the UP wants to sell it off. If you have any information on the traffic and a possible sell off please let us know.

Auto Rolls, Co- Norfolk Southern Reposition. It goes to Kansas city. The the MDVSI/SIDV That's really about it Maybe a grain train or a coal once on a blue moon. Limon sub is pretty dead anymore. They'll generate more online business, for sure.
Date: 04/23/17 19:44 Re: KP Traffic Denver to Salina Author: upkpfan The Colorado coal train to Florida is still running. It had a tough time of it today. It stopped out West of Black Wolf and quite a bit later it stopped again blocking the road thru the town. It finally made it into Wolf Siding. When I stopped beside it, all I could hear was the second engine on the front end running. Wondered if they would run a couple units out from Salina to tow it on in. A little before 6 pm I heard a power move WB, so about 20 minutes later I went out to check. They brought out 1 unit and put it on as the second DPU. Ay 7:15 pm., it came EB thru town here. Several grain trains a day. I've seen a many as 4 in the morning. Grain is the main thing now, but most of them run at night as the MOW is working 11 hours a day when they work on 2 bridges between here, Ellsworth, KS and Black Wolf and also a couple bridges East of Brookville.
The SIDV ran EB while I was beside the stricken coal train and another I think runs on Wed., so yes a couple times a week each way. This is the first I've heard about G&W interested in line. Who is that? upkpfan Date: 04/23/17 19:52 Re: KP Traffic Denver to Salina Author: mg8711 Didn't know the Florida train was still running, I haven't personally heard of a coal train running east of Abilene since December, outside of a stray empty that was going into storage at Salina.

Was gone for a few years but am back and on TO again finally. As far as I know the G&W is the company who owns the KYLE. Was told that by a friend in Abilene.

It is for Cement plants. There are currently no coal train's running to utility plants out on the KP right now. Date: 04/23/17 22:35 Re: KP Traffic Denver to Salina Author: HistoryBuff MDVSI runs once a week on Saturday.
MSIDV runs once a week on Sundays, sometimes an second train is called midweek. ARLNSR runs 5-6 days a week. Byers grain trains 1-2 a month. Cheyenne Wells grain trains 3-5 a month. Last week 4 military trains out of Fort Riley will come back in a few weeks. Assorted grain train between Salina and Sharon Springs. A few run thru grain trains. Work train season is coming so expect those. CWELH and CWENZ a few days ago. LDJ50 eastbound, LDJ51 westbound Monday and Thursdays, Limon Local. 2 empty intermodal trains from Denver to G3/G4 the last couple weeks. MSIOK/MOKSI twice weekly. Not as busy as they used to be but busier than people think. New business coming in the form of rock/sand trains out of Pueblo to the KP when the company can purchase a place to unload the trains. Also a large tie replacement project scheduled for this year between Denver and Sharon Springs will add work trains. HB Date: 04/24/17 13:15 Re: KP Traffic Denver to Salina Author: trainupaboy I count 25-30 trains a week on the KP. I don't think that's too bad for the old KP. We seem to have a variety anyway!
