Western Railroad Discussion > UP 844 East In Typical Wyoming Weather...Date: 04/28/17 21:03 UP 844 East In Typical Wyoming Weather... Author: mojaveflyer After realizing my social calendar was open today, I decided to head north to try some shots of the 844's return from Idaho. The weather forecast became more interesting as the day progressed. Checking the train's schedule, I realized I had time to head west from Laramie and got as far as downtown Bosler, WY, and set up for a shot. As the train approached me, the wind from the north, was blowing steam and smoke to the south side of the train, completely hiding the train. It was cold as well, with temperatures near 32 degrees and wind blowing from 14 - 18 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. IT WAS COLD! After the train passed me I headed east towards Hermosa while the train paused in Laramie. I got to Hermosa and pretty soon I had company. While waiting for the 844, a westbound and an eastbound came by. After he got by me at Hermosa, I headed north on the county road to jump on I-80. I heard the 844 call a channel change so I knew he was near Granite. As I traveled east on I-80, I realized the 844 wasn't traveling very fast so I got off on Otto Road and looked for a suitable place for a shot. I got a shot at Borie as the 844 took Track #3 and then I headed in to town. I soon saw why the DS put the 844 down the Cut Off. There were three trains stacked up west of Cheyenne on Tracks 1 & 2. Getting down to the west end of the yard I grabbed a shot of the 844 as it came by the head end of two trains waiting to get in to the yard in a snow squall. Not the greatest shot but as I said, it was typical Wyoming weather...
Photo #1- The UP 844 passes me in downtown Bosler. I'm guessing the auto racks were set out for a mechanical problem. Photo #2- There IS a train behind the steam and smoke... More in Part II. Photo #4- Once again showing there was a train behind the steam engine, 844 is on the approach to the crossing at Hermosa. Photo #5- UP 844 passes under the signal bridge at Hermosa. Part III Author: mojaveflyer Photo #6- UP 844 takes a 'Diverging Clear' on to Track #3 to run around the eastbound traffic jam.
Photo #7- Passing the traffic jam to his left, UP 844 enters the Cheyenne Yard in a snow squall.. fitting end to a cold, nasty day! On the way home I stopped in Ft Collins and ate at the Charco Broiler on Mulberry St east of downtown. If you're in the area I highly recommend this eating emporium... Thanks for looking! Lots of steam looks really good in the cold vapor air.
