Update on SP 1006 at OERM (SCRM) 4/29/17
Author: TomPlatten

Today was an important day in the reassembly of the SP 1006. Carl, Frank, and John , with some assistance from me began actually putting the trucks back together. The wheels were installed in the traction motor over the last several weeks. Now it was time to install the journal boxes onto the axles, then secure them with the equalizers. Next time we will set the frames over the whole assembly. Then we will have to install all of the brake rigging! While all of that was going on, Dave was up in the cab activating and checking as many electrical appurtenances as possible now that the batteries are in place.

This photo show Frank installing the journal pad under the axle now the the journal box is in place. Frank loves to install journal pads!

Great shots, the idea with the journal pads is that they contact the axle, unfortunately in doing so
they also contact the knuckles! Nice work on those trucks, that oughta be worth a whole lot of years
worth of service.

I have installed journal pads years ago when I was basically into diesel maintenance. That is why I preferred the dry pads. Much easier to install. When they are in--add journal oil and make sure the oil level is checked again in three or four days!

I seem to recall that someone donated a Drop Table to your Museum at one time and a Wheel Lathe ?

The wheel lathe is installed, it needs a small building over the unit and to be wired up. The drop table will go in to the new diesel facility.

And don't forget proper adjustment of the thrust blocks to control the lateral!

We have very knowledgeable people on the crew who take care of that! Carl has made some measurement tools. Much time was spent dealing with brasses. When the 1006 is done it will probably outlive anyone currently working on it!

It's easy to forget how much work goes in to keeping a diesel running. Tip of the hat to all the hard workers this weekend.

Where do you get journal pads? Are they still manufactured? Or is there a substitute?

The museum has a shack where many of these pads are stored in boxes!
