CN 100989 Has an Interesting Paint Job
Author: lynnpowell

CN center-flow grain hopper on the M&ET's unloading loop in Empire, CA yesterday. Car initials and number hand are lettered....it took a while for the artist to complete this work! Note that new reflective safety stripes have been added.

I saw that car a few days ago after the train was dropped off by UP at Covell siding and was awaiting pickup by the M&ET. All I can say is what a waste of good talent.

Ken Goslett captured it in Montreal a while back:

I think it looks better than the CN Lifesaver car that was official some years back.

I don't know how "smart" the "artist" really was, the reporting marks are readable, and the FRA mandated reflective markings are not painted over. Its also possible that the marks and reflective strips were reapplied by some rip track after the artist did his work, as letting the car run without either places the car out of compliance with AAR FRA requirements. As it is any rip track could bill the car owner for some missing stenciling like load limit and tare weight, etc.

As much as I hate graffiti I have to concede that this is quite impressive.

While I think it is attractive, I have to agree with the idea that it is a tremendous waste of talent. Rather than doing something completely illegal and subject to jail, the person could just as easily get a legitimate job being paid to use their skills.
