Metro Ports Genset Long Beach CA
Author: erielackawanna

Image is six years old, however I think it's not nostalgia yet.

Back in 2011 I was working for a company that had a longterm vendor/client relationship with Metro Ports in Long Beach and had the opportunity to visit their property. Unfortunately the dock itself (in Long Beach CA) is fairly tight so there's not a lot of great pictures to be had and the one that one have been really cool (the engine coming through the aggregate loader) I didn't think of until too late.

Still, was a neat op to watch and I appreciated the welcoming crew.

Photo taken with full permission, under supervision of company reps, and while wearing full PPP.

Is this the place that had the Conrail C636, and after that a Santa Fe SF30C?

I must have missed the Conrail C636. The genset replaced one SF30C. The other one held on until less than a year ago when it had accident. Right now they only have the genset.

Prior to the SF30Cs I know they had ex SP RSD12s. As noted above, I wasn't even aware of the C636.

The only ex-conrail C636 in CA that I was aware of was at Delta Bulk Terminal at the Port of Stockton, CA. I believe it went to the DL in Scranton.

The ex SP RSD12's are, fortunately, in OERM Perris, I believe.

Thanks, Tom - they were both in Perris just a couple months later in May 1994.

Former SP 2958 and 2954 are indeed at OERM in Carbarn 7. Neither is currently operational. 2958 is in need of radiator replacement and batteries. 2954 is missing a water pump and needs new wheels as the current wheels are beyond turning. The radiator replacement for 2958 may be soon! It is hoped that after some body repair and batteries it can be operated. Crew like to switch with it. Unfortunately we are still tied up with the SP1006.

SP 2954 and 2958 had quite varied careers. Here they are owned by Weyerhaeuser working on their Oregon, California & Eastern in 1975. They got four of them with it's purchase from SP/BN, but they proved hard on the track and were returned to SP where they were given new paint jobs and worked the LA-area transfers until retired.

Here's a shot of the 2954 just out of the paint shop in August 1976 and the 2958 a couple of years later in April of 1978. Both shots at City of Industry.-BMT
