No tornado but...
Author: santafe199

…it was looking kinda-sorta scary for a while!

1. UP 7884 sits with Wichita-bound coal loads on the main line at Ike (siding), KS. A westbound grain empty has just arrived and is being tied down. After the 7884 + crew gets a track warrant they will enter the BNSF Strong City Sub just down the road at Abilene. From there they will ride BNSF rails down to Lost Springs where they will get back on home rails for the last leg into Wichita. By the way: An evidently railfan-friendly engineer must have seen me taking my shots from this farm field crossing. He turned his headlights up bright, then back down after I was done…

This is Kansas! (Do you know where your tornado cover is???)

Nice photo, Lance. Everything came together with some interesting lights, both from the locomotive and that hole in the sky. Just be glad the tornado didn't come visiting. Those things can mess up your whole day.

Went right through that kind stuff last WED thanks to a half hour delay for roadwork in CO heading to Goodland, KS, pretty bad, storm chasers everywhere, third worst rain I have EVER driven in, down to 25 on I-70 which was too fast, the other two I actually had to pull over and wait. Nice catch.

I looked around, but didn't spot any aeronautical broomsticks...

I'm somewhat dazed and confused, i.e. situation normal, about this.
Where was this train coming from and why was it on the Santa Fe
when the UP has its own line through Abilene. Doesn't it?

Oh yes, very nice photo and glad you didn't have to find the storm cellar!

"Ike" is a siding constructed between Solomon & Abilene on the KP main line between Denver & Topeka. This train will proceed "just down the road" to Abilene where it will get on the BNSF Strong City Sub (coming down from Superior, NE) @ West Abilene. It will go through Abilene on the SC Sub (instead of its own rails) all the way down to Lost Springs, KS where the BNSF Strong City Sub ends. Trains from both RRs then get on UP (ex-Rock Island) rails for the run down to Peabody, KS. At Peabody BNSF trains depart the UP track for the BNSF La Junta Sub main for the trip west over to Newton. UP trains continue south to Wichita...

Thanks, Lance. And hopefully the rest of you will know why I was
so dazed and confused!
